Choosing the right English test for a UK visa application can be confusing. Many applicants are unsure whether they need a Trinity GESE, Trinity ISE I, or Trinity ISE II exam, what English level they need to achieve, and how to prepare effectively.

At Speak Up London, a Trinity SELT Approved Service Provider and a British Council accredited English language school, we support students preparing for their Trinity SELT exams with personalised lessons, exam practice, and guidance from experienced English teachers.

The Trinity SELT exam you need depends on your visa route, the required CEFR English level (A1, A2, B1, or B2), and whether your application requires speaking and listening only or all four English skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

What Is a Trinity SELT Exam?

A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is an English language test approved by the UK Home Office for visa and immigration purposes.

Trinity College London provides several SELT exams designed to assess different levels of English ability. These exams are recognised for specific UK immigration routes, including applications for settlement and citizenship.

Before booking your exam, it is important to check which test is accepted for your specific visa application.

Which Trinity SELT Exam Do I Need?

The Trinity Secure English Language Test (SELT) you need depends on the type of UK visa or immigration application you are making. Trinity offers two UKVI-approved SELTs: GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English) and ISE (Integrated Skills in English).

Trinity GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English)

GESE assesses speaking and listening skills through a one-to-one conversation with a Trinity examiner. It is designed for applicants whose visa requires proof of spoken English only.

UKVI-approved GESE SELT levels include:

  • A1 (Grade 2) – Partner, Parent, Sportsperson and Representative of an Overseas Business visas
  • A2 (Grade 3) – Partner and Parent visa extensions
  • B1 (Grade 5) – Indefinite Leave to Remain (Settlement) and British Citizenship applications

Trinity ISE (Integrated Skills in English)

ISE assesses all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. It is required for visa routes where applicants must demonstrate full English language proficiency.

UKVI-approved ISE SELT levels include:

  • ISE I (B1) – Skilled Worker, Student and Scale-up Worker visas
  • ISE II (B2) – Innovator Founder, Minister of Religion and other routes requiring B2 English
  • ISE III (C1) – Visa categories requiring C1 English proficiency

Trinity GESE vs ISE: What Is the Difference?

Trinity GESE
Trinity ISE
Tests speaking and listening only
Tests reading, writing, speaking and listening
One-to-one conversation with a Trinity examiner
Integrated exam assessing all four language skills
Used for visa routes that require spoken English only
Used for visa routes that require all four language skills

Understanding the difference between GESE and ISE is one of the most important steps before starting your preparation.
