British vs. American English: Are We Even Speaking the Same Language?

Navigating the world of English can be a confusing journey, especially when you realize that the “English” you hear in Hollywood movies isn’t quite the same as the “English” spoken on the streets of London. As the famous saying goes, the UK and the US are “two countries divided by a common language.”

British vs. American English

If you are looking to bridge that gap and speak like a local, there is no better place to start than our General English Courses at Speak Up London. Located right on Oxford Street, our courses are designed to help you master these nuances and gain the confidence to communicate fluently in any setting.

1. Getting Around: The Street and the Tube

For many visitors, the first point of confusion happens before they even leave the station. In London, the primary way to get around the city is the Tube (or the Underground). In the United States, this system is known as the Subway.

  • Pavement (UK) vs. Sidewalk (US): * UK Example: “Please stay on the pavement; the cars are moving quite fast on this road.”
    • US Example: “There’s some chalk art on the sidewalk in front of the house.”
  • The Loo (UK) vs. The Restroom (US):
    • UK Example: “I’ll be just a moment; I need to nip to the loo.”
    • US Example: “Excuse me, where is the restroom located in this restaurant?”

2. The “Pants” Problem

One of the most important lessons for any English learner is the “Pants” rule. In the United States, pants are a standard outer garment for your legs. However, in the UK, pants refers strictly to underwear. In British English, the correct term for legwear is trousers.

  • Trousers (UK) vs. Pants (US):
    • UK Example: “I bought a smart new pair of trousers for my job interview.”
    • US Example: “I think I spilled coffee on my pants this morning.”
  • Jumper (UK) vs. Sweater (US):
    • UK Example: “It’s getting a bit chilly; I think I’ll put on a woolly jumper.”
    • US Example: “She wore a festive sweater to the holiday party.”
  • Trainers (UK) vs. Sneakers (US):
    • UK Example: “I need a new pair of trainers for my morning run in Hyde Park.”

US Example: “Those are really cool sneakers! Where did you get them?”

3. The Food Fight: Crisps, Chips, and Biscuits

Ordering a snack shouldn’t be difficult, but vocabulary differences often make it a challenge.

  • Crisps (UK) vs. Chips (US):
    • UK Example: “Would you like a packet of cheese and onion crisps with your sandwich?”
    • US Example: “I grabbed a big bag of potato chips for the game.”
  • Chips (UK) vs. Fries (US):
    • UK Example: “I’ll have the fish and chips with plenty of salt and vinegar, please.”
    • US Example: “Do you want a large order of fries with your burger?”
  • Biscuits (UK) vs. Cookies (US):
    • UK Example: “There’s nothing better than dunking a biscuit into a hot cup of tea.”
    • US Example: “The kids are baking chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen.”

4. Around the House and On the Road

Even your living arrangements and your vehicle change names depending on which side of the Atlantic you are on.

  • Flat (UK) vs. Apartment (US):
    • UK Example: “I’ve just moved into a lovely two-bedroom flat near the station.”
    • US Example: “He’s looking for a modern apartment in downtown New York.”
  • Lift (UK) vs. Elevator (US):
    • UK Example: “The lift is out of order, so we’ll have to take the stairs to the fourth floor.”
    • US Example: “Step into the elevator and press the button for the lobby.”
  • Petrol (UK) vs. Gas (US):
    • UK Example: “We need to find a petrol station before we hit the motorway.”
    • US Example: “I need to stop for gas before the tank hits empty.”
