Level of English for work 1

What level of English do I need to work in the UK?

For many migrants, the United Kingdom (UK) is a top destination to live and work in, offering wonderful career opportunities, easy access to the rest of Europe, and has a rich multicultural environment! Having strong English skills can support your career progression, and this article discusses the level of English needed to work in the UK.

Communication skills are important in the workplace and English proficiency plays a big role. Strong communication skills can enhance job prospects and help build professional relationships, making it important to practise the English language to help enhance career growth.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an internationally recognised standard that measures language proficiency, from A1 for beginners to C2 for those with a complete understanding of the English language.

The table below shows the six levels of proficiency that range from pre-A1 to C2.

According to the UK government website, for most work visas, you need a B1 (intermediate level) to prove you can read, write, speak and understand English. You would need to pass an English language test with recognised providers.

What type of jobs can I gain with B1 level English?

If you have just arrived in the UK, you can simply find jobs that help build your confidence, and most importantly, improve your language skills. This level of English allows you to communicate and understand simple conversations. The types of jobs you can work at this level include:

● bar staff
● waiter/waitress
● barista
● customer service roles in retail shops

These jobs are highly beneficial, especially as your first job in a country you are new to.
My first job in London was at a retail store called River Island. The hours were increasingly long, but I gained a lot of important skills with this experience, such as confidence, working in a team, having the ability to communicate with a range of people, and socialising!

If you are new to the UK, and unfamiliar with its surroundings, culture, and language requirements, then I would recommend working in the above-mentioned jobs to feel and experience real situations. This experience will help you adjust to life in the UK, and boost your English language skills.

IELTS Life Skills Test

Did you know, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language test? To demonstrate your speaking and listening skills for a UK visa application, you should take the IELTS Life Skills test, which is designed for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
The qualification can not only support your UK visa application but also serve as a path for you to study at university in the future. The IELTS Life Skills test helps you become familiar with the test format, making it easier to prepare for the appropriate IELTS exam when the time comes.

Recommended ways to improve your English

There are many mobile applications, websites and online tutors to help you achieve the English level needed to live and work in the UK. However, the most effective way to learn is by taking English lessons in class. In a classroom, you will be surrounded by like-minded students who share the same goal of improving their English skills. You won’t be alone in this journey; you will learn alongside others and build confidence together. Give it a try!

Grazie mille Speak Up London a presto! ☺️
